In Swedish cities, bicycles are used by almost everyone – women and men, rich and poor, young and old alike. Bikes are everywhere and the infrastructure has been developed accordingly.
However, in many regions around the world the situation is altogether different. Here, the bicycle is a means of transportation only available to half of the population. Women just don’t ride bicycles. The reasons for this are many and wide-ranging – cultural and religious issues, safety concerns, infrastructure and the design of the bicycle each play a part. At Women on Wheels, we want to mobilize women by rethinking the bicycle and reshaping the societal views of women cyclists. |
